Excess body hair is often considered unsightly. Removing the hair with usual methods only offers a temporary effect and must be repeated on a daily or weekly basis. This is why more and more people choose a longer-lasting method of hair removal such as laser epilation.

At the Hautmedizin Bad Soden, we offer long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser therapy or alternatively IPL technology to remove unwanted hair. The procedure is virtually pain-free and gentle on the skin.

How does laser hair removal work?

During a personal consultation, we will discuss with you the area to be treated and the procedure, what result can be expected and which laser will be used. Light hair is difficult to treat. The darker and thicker the hair, the better the result. Laser epilation works particularly well on dark hair.

During the procedure, the laser applicator is moved slowly over the skin so that the laser beam can penetrate the tissue to the hair root. The heat that is generated destroys the hair root without damaging the surrounding tissue. The duration of the procedure depends on the size of the treated area and the rate of the patient’s hair growth. For an optimum and long-term result, we recommend sessions every few weeks.

The IPL method does not use a laser but the mode of action is similar. The unwanted hair is treated using pulsed light.

How long does the laser epilation result last?

The destroyed hair follicles cannot produce new hair. However, it is possible for the roots to reform over time and, as a result, for hair to start growing again. However, this can take several months to years. Laser treatment can be repeated where necessary.

What are the risks of hair removal by laser?

Laser treatments to remove hair are extremely low risk. Temporary redness of the skin may occur after the treatment. Allergic reactions or skin pigmentation only occur in very rare cases.

Will the costs for removing excessive body hair be covered by health insurance?

Private health insurance companies usually cover the treatment if it is medically indicated, e.g. male hair growth on the face, ingrowing hairs, skin inflammation. (Hair removal is not generally considered medically necessary and the costs are therefore not covered by private or statutory health insurance.)
