Sweating is a normal process. However, excessive sweating can lead to significant psychological strain. Do you suffer from wet underarms? Does this make your hands ice cold? Do you avoid doing some activities and does it impact your choice of clothing? Then we can offer you effective and safe help. Botulinum injections reduces the activity of the sweat glands for many months and you can feel comfortable again in your skin.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweating that goes beyond the normal extent. It indicates a dysfunction of the sweat glands. It is a natural protective function to prevent the body from overheating.
However, people who suffer from hyperhidrosis sweat regardless of high temperatures or physical exertion. For many of those affected, this often means uncomfortable situations in their daily life; the excessive sweating can quickly cause wet patches on clothing, strong odours or wet hands when shaking hands. It is not uncommon for people suffering with hyperhidrosis to restrict their lifestyle and social contacts due to embarrassment.

How does botulinum help with excessive sweating?

Botulinum is an active agent frequently used in medicine that inhibits signals being transmitted to the nerves and relaxes the muscles. Botox® also provides temporary relief for sweating. The preparation is injected in the area affected with excessive sweat production using a fine needle, where it disrupts the nerves transmitting the signal to the sweat glands, which reduces the sweating in this area.

It can be used in the armpits, on the hands and feet and on the head. A mild anaesthetic ointment is applied to the area to be treated to make the injections more comfortable.
The effect gradually builds up, it can take a few days or a few weeks for the sweat production to reduce. The result lasts for several months and can be repeated at any time.

What are the risks with this treatment?

We only use botulinum preparations in low doses so there is no risk of poisoning. There may be some slight redness in the treated areas for a few days. Other risks such as temporary impaired sensitivity are very rare and only occur in isolated cases.

Alternative treatment: surgical suction curettage of the sweat glands in our surgical dermatology department – permanently reduces sweating in the armpits by approx. 80%.
